Alphas may have the current harem situation in the past, but for my liking alphas perceived a more restrictive behaviour was better as well. Think about it, stable relationships with loyalty (at least temporary) was much better at raising children successfully and with quality even when you imagine stone-age.
Longer life-spans, breeding that demands time to raise, quality over simply breeding as much as one can are human traits since ever. Alpha males also age and have affection, maybe more than betas when combined with good morals.
Seems to me it was a net victory for all. Society won, betas as well and alphas probably made possible to raise several children with success together with few women than having lots with different women (but having them raised by betas or unable people).
Refinement and progress made patriarchy into what it used to be before feminism. Restricting sex morals and reproduction means may be beneficial even for those who could bend the rules. That respect to principle and morals was our society’s largest strength.
